Exhibitors searching for help often use five or six different phrases for what is mostly the same service. This short guide explains the main terms so you can brief suppliers clearly.
Exhibition Stand or Booth?
They mean the same thing: the temporary space you rent at a trade show. "Booth" is the usual word in North America and "stand" in the UK, Europe and the Middle East. Our custom booth page and our exhibition stand contractors in Dubai page describe the same kind of work in each region's vocabulary.
Stand Designer, Builder and Contractor
- Designer: produces the layout, branding and 3D concept.
- Builder or fabricator: manufactures the structure and finishes in a workshop.
- Contractor: installs on site, handles venue paperwork and dismantles afterwards. See installation and dismantling.
A single company can do all three. Others specialise in one, so ask who is responsible for each stage before signing.
Custom, Modular, Shell Scheme and Rental
- Custom stand: designed and built for one exhibitor and one space.
- Modular stand: assembled from reusable components in different layouts.
- Shell scheme: the organiser's basic walls and fascia, which you dress with graphics and furniture.
- Rental stand: a designed stand you hire for the show rather than own. See booth rental.
Double-Deck Stands and Country Pavilions
Two special cases: a double-deck stand has a second floor and needs organiser and structural approval, and a country pavilion is a group stand for a delegation of companies.
Which Supplier Should You Ask?
Match the request to the work: if you have a floor plan and brand files, ask for a design and quote from a builder who also installs; if you only need installation of someone else's stand, ask for a contractor. Send your exhibitor manual and booked dimensions through get a quote and we will say plainly which service applies.
